Xbox Circular Saw Mash-Up Project
The goal was to take the visual brand language of a randomly selected brand (Xbox) and apply it to a product they likely would not make (a circular saw).
Final Product Advertisement Mockup.
The process came to a head in this advertisement of the final design.  This saw contains design standards from multiple Xbox family products: the handle takes the form of a rounded triangle, derived from combining the left and right side curvature of the Xbox controller to make it an ambidextrous design; the blade guard is based of of Xbox products with circular shapes, like the Xbox brand headphones, with sharper edges to juxtapose the rounded handle and signifying that the user should not touch it in use; and the alignment plate is similar to the front plate of the Xbox Series X console with its dark color and boxy shape that borrows the visual touch language of hard edges.
These sketches detail the ideation process of the project.  The started out with design cues from various points in the Xbox brand's lifespan, but ended up using mostly modern aesthetics for the final design.
This 1:1 blue foam and chipboard model was made to test the ergonomics and physical presence of the design.  It's a model made not test function, but to get an overall feel for the form of the product.
